The word tombstone is a combination of "Tomb" and "stone" . The former comes from the Greek word "tymbos", which means "grave", and the latter comes from the Greek word "STIA", which means "pebble". The word tombstone first appeared in English around 1560, when it was used to describe the lid of a sarcophagus. Its meaning as a tomb symbol began in 1711.

The word tombstone refers to a large stone that marks the place where a person is buried. Usually, the tombstone has a person's name, the date of their birth and death. Sometimes, the tombstone even lists the names of close family members, such as father, mother, spouse or child. Many tombstones have a short proverb or quotation called an epitaph. These maxims can be spiritual, humorous, thought-provoking - anything meaningful to the deceased or their loved ones. Well known public figures and celebrities sometimes choose appropriate epitaphs for their tombstones.
